The owners of this 1950s terraced house cooked in a six-square-metre kitchen while their south-west-facing garden was hardly connected to the home. They wanted one generous kitchen-diner with as much glazing as possible, without making the middle of the existing living room dark.
We designed a 3.5-metre-deep extension across the full width. The peat soil required piles, while two one-metre rooflights above the island bring daylight deep into the old floor plan. We coordinated the structural calculations and all preparations.
The result is 22 m² of extra living space, a four-metre sliding façade and a fully finished interior with plaster and a seamless floor. The build took four weeks and the kitchen programme was coordinated so the family was without a kitchen for only ten days.
